 Neighbours

- Tim Winton

The short story 'Neighbours' was taken from Tim winton's story 'Migrants of Australia'. It is a story about a newly maried couple living in multicultural and mantilingual suburb neighbourhood. It shows that the cultural and linguistic barriers cannot stop people from bestowing love and compassion.

The story begins with a young couples' migration to a new place where they had bad impressions on their neighbors who used to shout, produce unwanted noise and pee on the roads. They had a small house but its high ceiling and paned windows gave it the feel of elegant cottage. The young man wrote thesis and worked at home while the woman went to work in hospital. The macedonian family seemed to be dissatisfied for the young man's stay at home. Relations were uncomfortable for many months.

In a autumn, the couple cleared rubbish at their backyard and started planting vegetables. From then their relation with neighbour no longer remained cold. The neighbours came to fence and gave them advices about spacing, hilling and mulching. After few moments a women handed them a bag of garlic. No longer after the couple built a hen house with the help of one of the neighbour. As autumn merged into winter the vegetables was ready to harvest and they shared it to their neighbours too.

Later on, unfortunately they have to face a unplanned pregnancy which their neighbour came to know. The neighbours smile tirelessly. The young man gave presents to the neighbours. Later on, the neighbours too supported them. A Greek Woman suggested name, A Italian woman said that It was bound to be child and By late summer the woman next door knitted a baby suit and the polish man who helped them to build hen house provided them woods for fire. One day labour come to abruptly. It was the delivery time for pregnant woman. She gave birth to a child. The young man was happy for it. Moreover when he went outside there were his neighbours cheering for his newly born baby. Seeing this he couldn't control his emotions and grew full of tear and wept. Being a writer he realized that the novels hadn't prepared him for that situation.
