A Respectable Woman

The Story A Respectable woman is taken from  kate chopin's collection 'The Awakening and Other Stories.' Kate Chopin who was an American novelist and short story writer has written many novels and more than 100 short stories. The short story 'A Respectable Woman' revolves around the character of Mrs Baroda and her her conflict as she finds herself attracted to her husband's friend. The conflict follows the pattern of classical fiction and moves from exposition to rising action and then to climax and resolution. This is a narrative story where Mrs Baroda is central character and her husband Gaston and his friend Gouvernail.

At the begining of story, Gaston tells Mrs Baroda that his friend Gouvernail was coming to stay there for one of two weeks. Mrs Baroda seems little provoked. she had entertained a good deal during the winter with her husband and was looking for a period of unbroken rest and undisturbed conversation. She had unconsciously formed a image of him in her mind. She pictured him tall, slim, cynical; with eye glasses and he hands in pocket and she didn't like him but when Gouvernail arrived although he was slim enough but none of her other imagination matched and she liked him. when he first presented himself, she expected him to be talkative and intelligent she found him boring.

Once settled in plantation, she finds Gouvernail puzzling but still liked him. Being puzzled she leaves them alone together but later she thought of society and accompanied him. One day Gaston tells her that Gouvernail will be staying for one more week and wonders why was she irritated. That night she sat on a bench at the edge of a gravel walk. Gouvernail comes and sits to her and he handed a scarf which her husband send him. He talks about college days with Gaston but she was so much attracted to him that she wanted to touch him upon the face or on the lips. The stronger the desire grew the further She put herself away just because she was respectable woman and she left, leaving him alone.

Next day she departed to the city and didn't returned until Gouvernail was gone. When her husband talked about bringing him again she opposed but later after she proposed her husband to ask his friend stay there. Her husband was surprised and she said that she had overcome everything and she added that she would be very nice to him.
